The Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service announced on March 21 that the federal income tax filing due date is extended from April 15 to July 15.
California has also pushed its state income tax filing date to July 15. The federal and California income tax filing automatic extension deadlines are for individuals and businesses.
Individuals and businesses can use this extra time to file and make payments without interest or penalties.
As always, individuals needing additional time in addition to the automatic extension should request a filing extension with the federal government and the state.
“The COVID-19 pandemic is disrupting life for people and businesses statewide,” said State Controller Betty T. Yee, who serves as chair of FTB. “We are further extending tax filing deadlines for all Californians to July 15. Hopefully, this small measure of relief will help allow people to focus on their health and safety during these challenging times.”
Other states may have different filing deadlines. Please check with your state to verify due date.
